Cookery Schools – Q&A

Why do I need liability cover for my cookery school?

Liability cover is the most important insurance you can purchase. We offer public, products and employers liability cover as a package.

Public liability protects against claims made in respect of your legal liability for personal injury or damage suffered by third parties. Within a kitchen you will be using dangerous equipment with hot stoves and knives, even with the best care in the world accidents do happen. Public liability cover will defend you and cover any costs awarded.

We also recommend you include products liability insurance including poisoning risks and injury as a result of allergic reactions.

Employers liability is a legal requirement in the UK. If you employ anyone to work for your cookery school, have sub-contractors or volunteers who just help you from time to time. This protects you against claims made in respect of your legal liability for death, disease or injury sustained by an employee during the course of their employment.

What limit of liability do I need?

We understand that not all cookery schools offer the same services. You can be working from home one day, at a purpose-built school the next then demonstrating at a local food festival or offering private cheffing. As such our insurance will cover you anywhere in the UK we can also offer transit cover to cover both your stock and business equipment

I run my school from home so my household insurer covers me?

You must disclose any business use from the home to your insurer. Many household insurance companies will not extend your liability cover to include your cookery school. at JMP we work with specialist insurers. They offer a policy for your home and provide cover for your cookery school so you can be safe in the knowledge that there are no gaps in cover.
